The City of Fremont is pleased to announce that it has completed the most complex public works project in the City's history, 10 months ahead of schedule and almost $4 million under budget! Thanks to careful project administration and cooperation of various stakeholders and agencies, the project team completed the Washington Boulevard/Paseo Padre Parkway Grade Separation Project in May 2010 after approximately 13 years of planning, project development and construction.

"This project could not have happened without the support and cooperation of the multiple local and regional agencies, numerous utility companies, the Union Pacific Railroad, BART, the contractor and Fremont's residents and motorists," said Jim Pierson, Fremont's Transportation and Operations Director. "So, a big thank you to all involved for such top-notch work."

Realizing the Benefits

With the project complete, motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians now travel safely on the new Washington Boulevard overpass and Paseo Padre Parkway underpass. There are no more delays caused by passing trains, therefore reducing greenhouse gas emissions from idling cars. In all, the City eliminated four active at-grade railroad crossings and two inactive crossings. Trains no longer blow their horns at Washington Boulevard or at Paseo Padre Parkway. The project also improves the entire Bay Area regional transportation system by making possible the future extension of BART from the Downtown Fremont Station to a new station in Warm Springs, and eventually to Santa Clara.

With the project completed, this website will remain online through May 2011 to provide more information about the history of the construction process and overall project.
